It highlights the precursors of the Impressionist movement and the sculpture of the period before going on to explore the paintings of Degas, Monet and Renoir and their contemporary of the period in sculpture, Rodin. We will then explore works by post-impressionist artists such as Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Following a chronological circuit, it explores all three wings of the former palace of the kings and emperors of France including its architectural evolution. Some of the highlights include the Khorsabad Palace in The Ancient Near East department, The Venus de Milo, the recently restored Winged Victory of Samothrace, Leonardo’s Mona Lisa and Michaelangelo’s Slaves.

The new galleries are organized chronologically and are punctuated by period rooms that recreate the wood-paneled interiors of lavish residences and princely palaces in eighteenth-century Paris. We will then go on to explore the French painting section of the same period as well as works from the neo-cassical and romantic movements in addition to the Barbizon school.
